Say Thank You to Mitch, Democrats

Four days ago, I detailed the Democrat strategy regarding Brett Kavanaugh. Their hope, I explained, was not that Kavanaugh's confirmation would be blocked. Instead, they merely hoped to create the impression among the general public that something nefarious is going on. That way, when the confirmation moves forward over their loud objections, Republicans will look like bullies. The various and sundry allegations against Kavanaugh didn't necessarily have to be true, they merely had to look credible. Then, with the help of a friendly media, the Democrats would come out looking like an underdog sticking up for "democracy" against a powerful Republican establishment. Earlier today, Senator Mitch McConnell walked directly into the Democrats' trap. Speaking at the Value Voters Summit in Washington D.C., Mitch McConnell opined on the Kavanaugh hearings, saying:

"You've watched the fight; you've watched the tactics. But here's what I want to tell you. In the very near future, Judge Kavanaugh will be on the United States Supreme Court. So, my friends, keep the faith. Don't get rattled by all of this. We're gonna plow right through it and do our job."

Here's a hint for Republicans, going forward. You can call out the Democrats' tactics, that's fine. You can criticize your opponents' credulity and hypocrisy. You can point out Brett Kavanaugh's good character. Better yet, you can make sure the reactions of real women to Kavanaugh's accuser are seen by everyone across America. But never, EVER, allow an old white man to insist that the party is going to "plow through" sexual assault allegations. And if a Republican ever says that, please don't applaud. Mark my words. This clip from McConnell (and the audience reaction) is going to feature prominently in Democrat campaign ads across the country, from now until November.
